Opera VR

Opera VR is an educational virtual environment developed for higher education arts and music students (AFAM – Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e Coreutica) as well as primary and lower secondary school students, dedicated to the exploration and understanding of opera.

It is an interactive experience built around a linear pathway enriched with hotspots—interactive points that allow users to listen, observe, test themselves, and discover content—guiding students through the story of the opera.

The project was developed by Whitesock and the Steffani Conservatory of Castelfranco Veneto.

Our Solution

La soluzione è stata quella di trasformare l’ascolto e lo studio dell’oThe solution was to transform the listening and study of opera into an explorable, interactive virtual environment, where students discover the story, characters, and educational content through a path filled with diverse elements that require active participation.

The experience unfolds through a branching narrative path that tells the story of the opera, enriched with hotspots providing access to in-depth multimedia content and quick quizzes required to move forward. On a narrative level, the environment is not a virtual classroom, but a space to explore: students are invited to move along the opera’s story, stop at the hotspots that pique their curiosity, and test themselves with quizzes.

On a mechanics level, the entire experience is gamified for the students: the hotspots are interactive and require active participation; the entire space is designed like a video game level where users must overcome challenges before progressing; and the different rooms offer freedom and agency to those exploring them.

Impact

Opera VR aims to transform the approach to opera by bringing a playful, exploratory language into a field—music history and music education—traditionally reliant on lectures and guided listening.

The immersive experience allows students, each at their own level, to develop a more vivid understanding of the historical and cultural context, musical innovations, and stories told by the operas, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Gameplay

Every space follows the same flow: students arrive in the Entrance Hall, the main hub for each opera. From here, they are directed to the first step required to move forward: the Lobby. The Lobby is a 3D show set to a musical background—unique to each opera—that envelops users in the atmosphere and narrative of what they are about to study.

After the Lobby, the other rooms open up, revealing the core of the experience: the hotspots. These are interaction points scattered along the path that tell the story of the opera, which can be activated either automatically or via a button in the physical space.

Some of the hotspots are informational: PDF hotspots for in-depth documents, 360° video hotspots that immerse students in a scene, audio hotspots with subtitles to listen to tracks or narratives, and NPC hotspots that allow students to listen to a character tell their own story.

Other hotspots are interactive and require active participation. Quiz hotspots and quiz sets go beyond simple assessment, generating a profile or final result based on the overall score. Drag & Drop hotspots allow students to reconstruct elements—such as a musical score—by dragging them into the correct position. Quest selection hotspots give students the choice between different paths to take, while Research hotspots connect the virtual experience to work done outside the environment: students receive a research prompt, submit it to their teacher, and unlock further progress by entering a code provided by the teacher.
